Taste of the Bayou
The 5th annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off (ASCO) will take place Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 in Bayou La Batre, as part of the redesigned 30th annual Taste of the Bayou. While four top chefs from around the state compete for the ASCO title, guests will have the opportunity to sample four varieties of Fresh Seafood. Presented by the Bayou La Batre Chamber of Commerce, the South Mobile County Tourism Authority and the Organized Seafood Association of Alabama. The Taste celebrates the Seafood Capital of Alabama. Dena Pigg, President of the Bayou La Batre Chamber, explains: “We’re excited to have the opportunity to team up with the Alabama Seafood Cookoff and hold the 31st annual Taste of the Bayou this May. Although we will offer a little different format than previous years, we are proud to continue the tradition of the Taste of the Bayou while watching Alabama chefs compete for a spot in the World Food Championships. I believe our seafood is some of the best in the world and this event will allow our guests a “Taste” of how seafood should be”.
In the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off, four top chefs from around the state will compete to represent Alabama at the Great American Cook-Off in New Orleans as well as the 2018 World Food Championships in Orange Beach. Sponsored by the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission, the goal is to find creative Alabama chefs willing to test their mettle in a culinary competition that revolves around all things Alabama Gulf Seafood. This year’s winner will follow in the footsteps of the three previous ASCO winners: Chef Brody Olive of Voyager’s at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach (2017), Chef Josh Quick of Odette in Florence (2016), and Chef George Reis of Ocean and 5 Point Public House Oyster Bar in Birmingham (2015).
“This event provides a great platform to showcase Alabama chefs and it’s a fun way to support the state’s seafood industry,” said Chris Blankenship, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and program administrator of the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission. “We’re excited to bring one of our state’s biggest seafood events to our state’s biggest processor of local seafood, and we’re looking forward to offering more events for the general public to enjoy this year.”
The Celebration of Taste of the Bayou will be held at the Bayou La Batre Community Center from 6 to 9pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at www.tasteofthebayou.org.
